Sign up for college presentations with any counselor in GRAC. All college presentations are posted in GRAC, daily bulletin and GRAC Calendar. Student attending college presentations are responsible for all work missed (from their class).
Be able to narrow down a reasonable number of colleges in which you plan to apply to. Be sure to include "safety" and "realistic" schools - and don't give up on your "dream" schools.
Plan ahead for the application deadlines for these colleges. Some application deadlines are as early as November.
If the college you are applying to requires teacher and counselor reports, make sure you ask the necessary faculty member early! Do not wait until the week of the deadline to ask for recommendations - your request may be declined.
Once you have asked the faculty member for their recommendation, provide that individual with your updated prepared Personal Data Sheet.
Plan on devoting enough time to each application you complete, especially if the application requires a persoanl statement/essay. Have someone proof-read it!
Register for the Fall SAT, SAT Subject (if required by your school) or ACT, if you have not yet taken the test yet or want to try to improve your previous score.
If registering on the College Board website for the first time, make sure you keep you username and password information in a safe place!
See Mrs. Sakai-Kawada if you are interested in a SAT or ACT Fee Waiver.
Students are responsible for having all test scores (SAT, SAT Subject or ACT) sent to their respective colleges.
Official Transcripts should be requested from the Registrar's Office. You will need to complete the Waiakea High School Transcript Request Form (available in the Registrar's office).
Attend the Financial Aid Night that will be sponsored by the University of Hawaii at Hilo. This informative night will be scheduled in October and will cover information dealing with the Financial Aid (FAFSA and scholarship information). Free FAFSA help will also be available after the presentation.
When completing the FAFSA online, make sure you are aware of your college's deadline for Financial Aid! Each college may have a different deadline!
After completing and submitting your FAFSA, make sure you receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) via email
Investigate scholarship opportunities in GRAC and online. All scholarships will be announced in the daily bulletin. You may see Mrs. Penny Yanagisawa for any scholarship questions.
Inquire about merit scholarship opportunities available through colleges, churches, social/fraternal and civic organizations.
Maintain the highest level of academic achievement possible throughout senior year.
Spring:
Continue to look for scholarship opportunities in GRAC, daily bulletin and online. Be aware of deadlines and requirements for each scholarship opportunity.
Congratulations! You will start finding out if you have been admitted to the colleges that you have applied for. Make sure you are aware of the college's deadline to submit your intent to enroll and deposit.
If your college requires a final transcript, make sure you request a final transcript from the Registrar's Office.
If you applied through Common Application and need a Final Report completed, make sure to see your counselor before graduation!
